Abstract

Research files, publications, correspondence, and other professional papers of Solomon Breibart, teacher and historian. Materials relate to Breibart's research and publications on the history of Charleston's Jewish population, in particular, the history of the city's oldest Jewish congregation, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim.

Collection Overview The bulk of the collection is housed in 20 large scrapbooks, ranging in size from 36 to 68 cm. in height. Collection contains records of the Charleston, SC, chapters of Aleph Zadik Aleph and B'nai B'rith Girls. Collection Overview Collection consists of two copies of a printed family tree of the Oppenheim family, tracing Oppenheim relatives back to the late 14th century (some gaps in time periods) and concluding in the 1980s. The author of the list of photographs (which appears printed on the family tree) was not consistent in listing names, particularly in terms of including middle names and married names for women. Abstract

The collection consists of nine photographs of Buchenwald concentration camp taken in April 1945, shortly after its liberation by the U.S. Army. Also included is a 1993 interview on videocassette with Corporal Charles Cross, who collected the photographs.
