Collection Overview

The collection consists of a family Bible annotated with family genealogy records. Several newspaper obituaries and marriage announcements have been pasted onto pages of the Bible. The Bible was printed in 1845. Genealogy dates range from 1812 to 1939. The bulk of the genealogy records date to the second half of the 19th century.

Abstract

A handwritten minute book of the Kalushiner Society of Charleston, South Carolina, from October 1927 through December 1936, mostly in Yiddish with some English. The Independent Kalushiner Society was a mutual aid society founded by Charleston residents who had immigrated from the shtetl of Kaluszyn in Poland. The society was founded in 1921 and provided members with benefits like no-interest loans, assistance when ill, and group insurance rates.

Portuguese Brit Milah and Shechita record book spanning the years 1700 to 1842 though probably created at multiple dates by multiple individuals. Book contains birth and death records, rules about Shechita, and circumcision records of a Sephardic community in the West Indies, most likely Curaçao.
