Holocaust archives field researchers collection

Abstract

The collection consists mostly of copied materials, including photographs, memoirs, clippings, books, objects, and other papers. These materials were collected for the Holocaust Archives from Holocaust survivors, World War II veterans, and others, including liberators of German concentration camps, who settled in South Carolina.

Hornik's Bargain House catalog

Abstract

The collection includes a spring 1910 catalog from Hornik's Bargain House of Charleston, South Carolina, a dry goods wholesale store. The catalog contains descriptions, images, and prices of goods as well as general advice on how to run a successful business. Also included is a color reproduction of a postcard featuring the Charleston city market on Meeting Street. The M. Hornik & Co. storefront, located on the corner of Meeting and Market Streets, can be seen in the background.

Alphonso W. Hoursey papers

Abstract Alphonso W. Hoursey was born in 1900 and raised in Charleston. He attended the Avery Normal Institute, Fisk University (1926), and the University of Michigan. After graduating from Fisk, Hoursey taught at the Avery Normal Institute, organized the HI-Y Club, which prioritized a ‘Protestant Ethic’ and sportsmanship. Abstract The Humane and Friendly Society was a benevolent society of free African American men in Charleston, South Carolina. Alexander von Humboldt clippings

The collection consists of two newspaper clippings concerning correspondence from Alexander V. Humboldt. One of the clippings contains the full text of a letter from Humboldt to George Ticknor. Edward Hyrne letter, 1700 (photocopy)

Collection Overview The document is a photocopy of a letter sent from Charleston to England. It was written by Edward Hyrne to his wife, who is only identified as "My Dear Love," on October 19, 1700. In the letter, Hyrne described a hurricane that hit Charleston on September 30, 1700. He also gave a brief account of life in the city. A typescript of the letter is also included in the collection.
